Update: Three-year-old toddler dies in van fire, family ‘wrapping their love around each other’

THE FAMILY of the three-year-old toddler who tragically died in a caravan in Boort on Thursday evening say the are totally devastated.

The family asked Boort District Health chief executive officer Donna Doyle to release a statement on their behalf this afternoon.

The family said they were "wrapping their love around each other" and asked for their privacy to be respected.

Arson squad detectives have remained at the scene throughout the day.

POLICE and Country Fire Authority investigators have started probing the fatal caravan fire scene at Boort.

Arson squad detectives from Melbourne will be part of the investigation after Thursday's evening fire in Lake View Street claimed the life of a three-year-old boy. Police on Friday confirmed details of the young life lost.

Police this afternoon said: "At this stage we don’t have any updates regarding the fire as the investigation remains ongoing."

"Sadly, we are able to confirm the young boy who died in the fire was a 3-year-old boy from the Greater Bendigo area."

CFA volunteers from the Boort brigade were quick in responding to the fire call soon after 6pm. Overnight and today, members of the CFA's peer support team are been providing wellbeing support to the volunteers.

With Lake View Street still with limited access, a funeral that had been scheduled for St Andrew's Anglican Church today has been relocated was the town's Uniting Church.

EARLIER REPORT

Police are investigating the a fatal fire in Boort this evening that has claimed the life of a child.

Emergency services, including local fire brigade units were called Lake View Street about 5.50pm. Lake View Street, near St Andrew's Anglican Church, and the street remains closed to traffic tonight.

Police said fire crews extinguished the blaze and a found a child inside the caravan...

They said the Arson and Explosives Squad had been notified and an arson chemist would attend the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officers said they were aware of the impact that such a tragic incident had on family, community members and first responders and would ensure that welfare services are in place.
